In anticipation of a gay march on Washington this year, and a challenge in the Supreme Court of the United States, many gay leaders are telling our people to calm down, wait, change will come. The words of Martin Luther King Jr. come to mind, “…This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism…” I’ve listened to commentary and read opinions all against a march on Washington and a fight in the courts. Gay: The New Black?
I do hear grumbling in the media, by pundits and community leaders about the “gay rights” movement usurping the term “civil rights” or equating themselves with the struggle of black Americans for their “civil rights”. I recently had a dialog with some of my peers and I thought I would share my thoughts: I do find it interesting when I hear anger over the LGBT community appropriating the term “civil rights” or equating LGBT struggles with black struggles.
