I read a post where a trans person was confronted with the assertion that being transgender was a choice just like getting a tattoo is a choice.
Mama Carla says otherwise.
“Being” transgender is never a choice. It is a realization. Many transgender people never come out and never transition. They go through their lives in the role of a cis person.
…but they’re still transgender.
The “choice” is to transition or not transition. This is the only really choice a transgender person struggles with.
Regardless of the decision, the person is still transgender.
For many the choice is to transition or to die.
I cannot envision a circumstance where a person must get a tattoo or die.
Another person used the analogy, “It’s a choice the same way you choose to swim if your boat sinks.”
